건축가의 서재에 머무르다

건축사사무소 마하의 김동현 소장은 2023년, 서울 용산구 동빙고동 언덕 위 오래된 목욕탕 건물 귀빈탕의 4층 주인집 공간을 개조해 카페 겸 건축사사무소 ‘마하 한남’을 열었다. 오랫동안 방치돼 동네 주민들이 밤에 다니기 무섭다고 느끼던 건물이었지만, 4층에 올라 한강이 펼쳐지는 장면을 마주한 순간 그는 이곳의 가능성을 직감했다.

기획부터 설계, 시공까지 직접 참여해 6개월 동안 완성한 마하 한남은 건축사사무소와 카페가 한 공간에 공존하는 드문 사례다. 과거 주인집의 방과 거실 구조를 살린 채 서가와 도면, 재료 샘플, 모형을 함께 배치해 방문객이 건축가의 작업 세계를 자연스럽게 체험하도록 구성했다. 손님은 커피를 마시며 공간을 감상할 뿐 아니라 때로는 건축가가 실제로 일하는 장면과도 마주한다.

이곳이 지향하는 가치는 단순히 독특한 카페를 만드는 데 머물지 않는다. 한때 동네 사랑방이었던 목욕탕의 기억을 이어받아, 지역 주민과 건축을 연결하는 새로운 커뮤니티 거점이 되고자 한다. 어두웠던 골목에 다시 불을 켠 마하 한남은, 건축가의 감각이 한 동네의 일상 풍경을 어떻게 바꿀 수 있는지를 조용하지만 분명하게 보여준다.

In 2023, Kim Dong-hyun, principal of Maha Architects, opened Maha Hannam by transforming the former owner's quarters on the fourth floor of an old bathhouse called Gwibin-tang in Dongbinggo-dong, Yongsan, Seoul. The building had long stood abandoned, and many neighbors were uneasy about passing by it at night, but the moment Kim reached the top floor and saw the Han River unfold before him, he sensed the potential of the place.

Developed over six months with Kim directly involved in planning, design, and construction, Maha Hannam is an uncommon hybrid of architecture office and cafe. The former residential layout remains legible, while bookshelves, drawings, material samples, and models invite visitors into the architect's working world. Guests come for coffee, but they also encounter architecture as a living practice, sometimes even watching Kim at work in the adjoining room.

More than a distinctive cafe, Maha Hannam seeks to extend the bathhouse's former role as a neighborhood gathering place. It turns architecture into something less distant and more shareable in everyday life, offering a new local anchor in a once-dark alley. In that sense, the project becomes a quiet but persuasive example of how an architect's sensibility can reshape the rhythm and atmosphere of an entire neighborhood.
