서울 영등포구청역 인근 당산동 골목의 펍블랑은 거창한 자본이나 치밀한 상권 분석보다, 한 사람의 취향과 생활 감각에서 출발한 동네 맥주집이다. 운영자 제비는 무엇을 할지 정하기도 전에 공실 점포를 계약했고, 철거 뒤 두 달 동안 공간을 새하얗게 칠하며 마치 스케치북처럼 가능성을 열어두었다. 본래 맥주집이었던 자리의 맥락을 이어가며, 자신의 취향에 맞는 블랑 맥주를 중심에 놓고 펍블랑이라는 이름을 만들었다.

이 공간이 특별한 이유는 공간 운영과 인테리어 전반에 일관된 태도가 스며 있기 때문이다. 버려진 가구를 고쳐 쓰고, 헤어진 이불보를 커튼으로 만들고, 이전 세입자가 남긴 전등갓까지 소품으로 되살리며 가능하면 쓰레기를 남기지 않겠다는 마음을 실천했다. 메뉴 또한 요리를 따로 배운 적 없는 제비가 집에서 직접 해먹던 음식들에서 출발했고, 손님이 배부르게 먹고 마음껏 떠들다 가길 바라는 마음만큼 푸짐하게 차려진다.

펍블랑은 이른바 핫플레이스와는 거리가 먼 평범한 동네 골목에서, 상업 공간이 얼마나 개인적이고 다정한 생활의 연장이 될 수 있는지를 보여준다. 혼자 오는 여성도 늦은 시간까지 편히 머물 수 있는 맥주집을 만들고 싶었던 바람은 실제 단골 손님들의 풍경이 되었고, 임대료 상승이라는 현실 속에서도 운영자는 오늘의 시간을 성실히 이어갔다. 아쉽게도 이 공간은 2025년 봄 문을 닫았지만, 그 태도와 분위기는 여전히 기억할 만한 장면으로 남는다.

pub blanc, tucked into an ordinary alley near Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station in Seoul, began less as a business plan than as an extension of one person's taste and everyday sensibility. Before she had even decided exactly what to do with the vacant storefront, the owner nicknamed Jebi signed the lease, cleared the interior, and spent two months painting the space entirely white, leaving it open like a blank sketchbook. Because the site had previously housed a beer bar, she chose to continue that thread and built the identity of the place around blanc beer, a choice guided more by instinct and preference than by market logic.

What made pub blanc distinctive was the consistency of its values. Discarded furniture was repaired and reused, worn bedding became curtains, and even a lampshade left by the former tenant found a second life as part of the interior. The menu emerged just as naturally from the meals Jebi had been making for herself at home, and her simple wish was clear: she wanted people to eat until they were full, talk loudly, and feel completely at ease.

In that sense, pub blanc suggested another possibility for commercial space. Far from the city's celebrated hot spots, it showed how a neighborhood pub could become an intimate and generous extension of daily life, especially for women who wanted to spend time alone late into the evening without discomfort. Though rising rents remained a constant concern and the pub sadly closed in the spring of 2025, its story still lingers as a memorable example of how warmth, resourcefulness, and conviction can shape a place people truly care about.
