따뜻한 햇살과 든든한 나무가 되어 주는 곳

그래픽 디자이너 이지현 대표는 2019년 네덜란드 로테르담의 소규모 공유오피스에서 받은 인상을 바탕으로, 서울 이태원 경리단길 주택가에 공유오피스 썬트리하우스를 직접 기획하고 운영하기 시작했다. 단기간에 생겼다 사라지는 공간들을 보며, 그는 임대가 아닌 매입을 선택했고 8개월 동안 공간을 찾은 끝에 지금의 건물을 마련했다.

총 15석 규모의 썬트리하우스는 1층부터 3층까지 오픈 사무공간, 회의실, 탕비실, 옥상으로 구성된 아담한 일터다. 디자인, 영상, 해외 프로젝트 등 다양한 분야의 프리랜서들이 함께 사용하며, 기존 멤버 전원의 동의가 있어야 새 멤버가 들어올 수 있는 방식으로 공동체의 결을 섬세하게 유지한다.

이곳의 핵심은 단순한 업무 공간 제공이 아니라 함께 만들어가는 일터라는 점이다. 일하는 시간에는 서로의 집중을 존중하고, 점심과 워크숍을 통해 자연스럽게 교류하며 실질적인 도움을 나눈다. 썬트리하우스는 혼자 일하는 고립감 대신, 서로에게 배우며 시야를 넓혀가는 동료적 연대의 가능성을 보여주는 대안적 작업 공간이다.

Graphic designer Jihyun Lee began Suntree House after being inspired by a small co-working space she encountered in Rotterdam during a 2019 working holiday in the Netherlands. After returning to Korea and spending eight months searching for the right place, she chose to buy, rather than lease, a building in a residential alley off Gyeongnidan-gil in Itaewon. It was a deliberate decision shaped by her desire to build something more durable than the many short-lived spaces she had seen come and go.

Suntree House is a compact workspace with fifteen seats spread across three floors, including open desks, a meeting room, a pantry, and a rooftop overlooking central Seoul. Freelancers from design, video, and international project work share the space, and the community is carefully maintained through a rule that every existing member must agree before someone new can join.

What distinguishes Suntree House is its belief that a workplace should be built together rather than simply consumed as a service. Members keep small talk to a minimum while working, then connect more naturally over lunch or through in-house workshops where they introduce their work and exchange practical knowledge. More than an office, the space offers a form of collegial solidarity for people who want their everyday working life to feel less isolated and more expansive.
