한옥마을에서 만난 덴마크 미니멀 디자인

덴마크의 프리미엄 수전 브랜드 볼라가 2023년 9월 1일, 서울 종로구 가회동 북촌 골목에 국내 첫 쇼룸을 열었다. 1960년대 아르네 야콥센이 디자인한 수전 하나에서 출발해 55년간 오직 수전만을 연구하고 제작해 온 볼라는, 2019년 한국 지사 설립 이후 3년의 준비 끝에 오래도록 일상과 함께할 수 있는 디자인을 보여주는 공간을 완성했다.

쇼룸 위치는 번화가 대신 60년 이상 된 한옥과 근대식 양옥이 한 담장 안에 공존하는 가회동 골목으로 정해졌다. 볼라는 30년 넘게 방치된 폐가를 되살리는 방법을 택했고, 한옥의 고유한 건축 양식을 존중하기 위해 이례적으로 한국 건축가와 협업했다. 내부에는 단청 오색에서 추출한 색을 벽에 입히고 한옥 전통 석재를 활용해 한국 재료와 볼라 제품의 색감과 질감이 자연스럽게 어우러지도록 했다.

이 쇼룸이 전달하는 메시지는 제품 홍보를 넘어선다. 수십 년 전 부품과도 호환되도록 설계한 롱게비티 철학처럼, 한 분야를 깊고 오래 파고드는 집중력이 브랜드의 본질임을 공간 전체로 증명한다. 수전에 대해서만큼은 제일 잘 알고 잘할 수 있다는 태도가 볼라의 정체성을 압축해 보여준다.

Danish premium faucet brand VOLA opened its first showroom in Korea on September 1, 2023, tucked into a quiet alley in Gahoe-dong, Bukchon, Seoul. Starting from a single faucet designed by Arne Jacobsen in the 1960s, VOLA has spent fifty-five years researching and manufacturing nothing but faucets, and after three years of preparation in Korea, it completed a space dedicated to designs meant to accompany everyday life for generations.

The showroom was located not in a commercial district but in a Bukchon alley where a hanok over sixty years old and a modern Western-style structure coexist within one boundary. Rather than demolish the long-abandoned property, VOLA chose restoration, and in an unusual move collaborated with a Korean architect in order to honor the hanok's architectural language.

The message conveyed through this space goes beyond product display. Much like VOLA's Longevity philosophy, in which parts remain compatible across decades, the showroom demonstrates that the brand's strength lies in deep, sustained focus on a single domain. It is a physical expression of the belief that knowing one thing deeply can become a powerful form of design identity.
